Use this when
Use this guide when you want ChatGPT to explain an article, PDF, supplied text or concept as a narrated video. Tell it who the explanation is for and which ideas to emphasize.
For a video where you want to select the style, duration and production settings yourself, start with Create your first video in ngram.
Before you start
Have an ngram account with credits ready. Sign in with the account you want to use for the explanation. Before generation, review the narrated 16:9 format and returned credit rate. The video’s length follows the source, and its final credit cost follows the completed duration.
Use ChatGPT on the web in a workspace that permits the ngram plugin and its creation actions. Your administrator may need to make the connection available. Keep your article or PDF publicly accessible, or paste source text directly into the conversation.
Connect ngram
- Open Plugins in ChatGPT and select the ngram connection available in your workspace. Install it and complete ngram sign-in when prompted.
- If your workspace uses a custom connection, select +, then Add custom MCP server. Name it ngram and enter https://mcp.ngram.com/openai as the server URL.
- For the custom connection, choose OAuth, review the requested access and select Create as a plugin. Complete ngram sign-in and install the resulting plugin.
- Review the connection’s three actions for creating a video explanation, checking its status and cancelling it.
- Start a new conversation and select ngram. Ask it to prepare a video explanation from your source for the audience you describe, then wait for your confirmation.
For current workspace permissions and custom connection controls, see OpenAI’s plugin connection guide.
What you should see
ChatGPT uses ngram to prepare the explanation and returns its format and credit rate for confirmation. This preparation step lets you check the request before generation starts.
Create and follow your explanation
- Supply an article or PDF URL, paste the source text, or describe the concept. Add the intended audience and the points to emphasize.
- Ask ChatGPT to prepare the explanation. Review the returned format and credit rate, then confirm when you are ready to create it.
- Keep the returned video job ID in the conversation. Ask ChatGPT to check that job’s progress while it runs.
- When it finishes, open the video and review its explanation against your source. Use its available MP4 link or open the project in ngram.
- To stop a video while it is processing, ask ChatGPT to cancel that job and check the returned status. The job may finish before a cancellation reaches it.
If the connection does not work
- If ngram or its creation action is unavailable, check the selected workspace and ask its administrator for the required plugin access.
- If sign-in fails, reopen the ngram connection and check the account you are signing in with. For a custom connection, check the server URL. Keep passwords, API keys and authorization tokens out of prompts.
- If preparation reports insufficient credits, open ngram to review the account’s credits, then prepare the explanation again when ready.
- If a video is already running, check its existing job status before submitting another creation request. If the source needs a correction, update it and review a new preparation before confirming another video.
If the connection still fails, follow Help and Support.
